Is MDMA therapy now possible in the Netherlands?

MDMA is illegal in the Netherlands and you are not allowed to perform medical treatments with psychedelics. However, you can still use the MDMA sessions not to be used as medical treatments but comparable sessions. For example, you can do therapeutic sessions with a legal MDMA variant that is not prohibited.

The ban on analogues

Our House of Representatives has passed a law that makes it possible to make all analogues of MDMA illegal in one go. The Senate is now dealing with this law and there has already been a debate about it. Today the decision was made to make analogues of MDMA illegal as of July 1st. This will make it more difficult to offer MDMA therapy with analogues.

Legalize MDMA therapy

On the other hand, there is a movement to legalize MDMA assisted psychotherapy as a medical treatment. As of early 2025, this has not yet happened and we expect this to be delayed. At the earliest, MDMA assisted therapy is now expected to be available in 2027. This is disappointing as Australia has already recognized MDMA treatments as a medical treatment for PTSD and psilocybin for depression in 2024.

Now do an MDMA session?

Now that MDMA analogues are becoming illegal and legalization of MDMA therapy is not expected to happen until 2027, it is possible that there will be no possibility to use MDMA (analogues) in a therapeutic setting for 1.5 years. So it might be a good idea to take advantage of the more flexible legislation and schedule your session.

Do health insurers reimburse MDMA sessions?

Because MDMA therapy is not yet a recognized medical treatment, MDMA therapy is not yet reimbursed by health insurers. You must therefore pay for the MDMA sessions yourself and the costs are between 650 and 875 euros per MDMA session with guidance before and after. For people with incomes lower than 30k euros per year, Triptherapie has created a subsidy pot to give a discount of up to 450 euros.
