Netflix and psychedelic documentaries

We think it is a good thing that more and more attention is being paid to the medicinal or therapeutic use of hallucinogenic drugs such as psychedelics. The group of psychedelic drugs is seen as many as a cure for most mental and psychosomatic disorders, and so we too would like all honest information to be available to all. Netflix has been doing a good job of releasing documentaries in this area in recent years.

There are now a lot of documentaries/movies on Netflix about psychedelics and how they work. For example, there is now a fair amount of information about magic mushrooms containing psilocybin and the well-known LSD. To a lesser extent, ayahuasca, MDMA and mescaline are also discussed. We do have a documentary listed for each psychedelic.

8: Magic Medicine

Magic medicine is based on relatively old research and is therefore fairly low on the list. However, we do see this study as a starting point for more research toward psilocybin and depression, and therefore this production deserves a mention in this list.

7: The Goop Lab

We are not a fan of Goop Lab per se, however during episode 1 we see something interesting. During episode 1 of season 1 of Goop Lab with Gwyneth Paltrow, we see part of a magic mushroom healing. Although each ceremony looks different and we are not a fan of the one shown, the episode does indicate the healing powers of psilocybin (magic mushrooms) during a therapeutic setting.

6: The Sunshine Makers

The Sunshine Makers is about the psychedelic drug LSD. It is not so much about the healing powers of LSD, but more about the history of LSD and the counter-movement in the 1960s.

5: The Last Shaman

Prevent depression and suicide by doing an ayahuasca ceremony with very much preparation in the jungle. Ayahuasca is not legal in the Netherlands, but it is comparable to a high dose of psilocybin (truffles). This film is a great example of how psychedelics can save lives.

4: Have A Good Trip

Although there are several psychedelic stories told by (semi-)celebrities, this documentary is mainly about LSD and psilocybin-containing mushrooms. LSD predominates. It is not so much an educational documentary, although the end of the film had educational value. This documentary is mainly meant to be entertaining and it is.

3: The Mind Explained

Season one episode 5 explains the workings of psychedelics. Should you have more time, feel free to watch season one and two in their entirety to learn more about your own brain.

2: How To Change Your Mind

How To Change Your Mind is based on the book by Michael Pollan. The book describes well a number of different psychedelic substances and is detailed on this. Each episode is about a different psychedelic and it covers LSD, psilocybin, MDMA and mescaline. Because of its completeness, this documentary ranks #2 on this list.

1: Fantastic Fungi

Fantastic Fungi is mainly about the medicinal effects of mushrooms and other fungi. Furthermore, it also talks a lot about the psilocybin-containing mushrooms from which you can have a psychedelic/mystical experience. We think this documentary best explains the power of mushrooms and it is also beautifully filmed. Watch the trailer of Fantastic Fungi here to get an idea about the different topics.
